Men of Iron

By Howard Pyle

Leadership

Sent to serve in a distant castle, young Myles Falworth enters a world of armor, banners, and guarded loyalties. His father’s name lies under accusation, and powerful men would see the charge stand.

Leadership is proved under watchful eyes—in restraint as much as in boldness, and in the willingness to bear the cost of acting at the right hour.

Kidnapped

By Robert Louis Stevenson

Prudence

Young David Balfour sets out to claim his inheritance and is thrust into treachery, abduction, and flight across the Scottish Highlands. Surrounded by shifting loyalties and hidden dangers, he must learn whom to trust and when to act.

Prudence is revealed under pressure—in careful judgment as much as in decisive action, and in the wisdom to distinguish faithful friends from dangerous companions.

The Virtues

The great stories endure because they reveal lasting truths about character. Rather than telling us what virtue is, they let us witness it under pressure. Each Tempered Edition invites readers to recognize these moments and consider what they reveal about themselves.

Love of Neighbor

  • “The task of the modern educator is not to cut down jungles, but to irrigate deserts”
    C.S. Lewis
From the Publisher
Towner Press was founded on the conviction that the task of education is not merely to remove what is difficult, but to awaken what has grown dormant. The greatest stories still possess the power to cultivate courage, judgment, loyalty, and love—but many readers never reach that power because time has placed unnecessary barriers between them and the text.
Our purpose is not to cut the classics down to modern proportions, nor to rewrite them in our own image. It is to prepare them with care: preserving the author’s voice, clarifying what has become obscure, and helping readers recover the depth, beauty, and moral imagination these works were written to nourish.
In this way, Towner Press seeks not to diminish the inheritance of the past, but to make its living waters accessible once more.
